This week’s must-follow blog is Do Not Refreeze by Leanne. This young lady, who hails from the east end of London is brutally honest with a sprinkle of a few naughty words and it’s why Do Not Refreeze is one of my favourite beauty blogs. It’s definitely worth checking out her eye make-up posts because the girl IS good.
Let’s find out more about Leanne…
Why did you start your blog?
This is a funny story – back when we were in college, my boyfriend asked me why I didn’t really wear any make-up (charming). Eager to please as always, I started to experiment under the guidance of a male friend who wore a lot of make-up and promptly discovered beauty tutorials on YouTube. Before long I’d started my own blog, although I never would have guessed at the time that it would go on to become one of the best decisions I ever made.
How long have you been blogging for?
4 years now – I’m one of the 2009 crowd! (Like us!)
What do you enjoy most about blogging?
ALL THE PRETTY THINGS. I love how I’ve tried about fifty million amazing products from fifty million brands I never would have heard of otherwise. Most of all, I love how the people I used to spend my time talking to online about make-up have become real-life friends.
What frustrates you most about blogging?
Oh, probably the same kinda stuff as everything else. I’m sure we all have green-eyed monster moments where we wonder what so-and-so blogger has that we don’t, why someone got invited to this event and we didn’t, why our page views and feedback aren’t quite as good as we’d like them to be when we’ve spent a long time working on a particular post… you get the gist. It’s the nature of the beast though, over the last couple of years beauty blogging has become a fiercely competitive industry and for those of us who also work full-time it’s just not physically possible to put as much into blogging as we’d like to.
How much time a week do you spend on your blog/reading other people’s blogs?
On my own, probably a few hours a week spread over whenever I’m free to resize a few pictures and schedule a post or two. As for others, I read blogs every morning on my way to work, in my lunch break and in the evenings with a hot chocolate. I’m pretty much obsessed!
What advice do you have for aspiring bloggers?
I wouldn’t like to say really, as I’m no expert and not really qualified to give advice. All I know is that you need to find your own voice, your own blogging style and stick to it. Don’t be tempted to copy what so-and-so does because it works for her.
What other interests do you have?
Healthy cooking – I’ve lost 4 stone in the last 8 months on Slimming World and have discovered a huge love for scratch-cooking that I never really knew was there. Also reading of course (who doesn’t love reading?); I’m all about gritty crime novels and unputdownable thrillers, or heartbreaking tragedies that have me crying like a bitch and my boyfriend raising his eyebrows at my ability to blub so freely over words on a page.
How many bottles of nail varnish do you own?
At last count, 416. I’ve accumulated another handful since then but can’t remember how many exactly. Either way the answer is ‘too bloody many’. I only have 10 fingers!
Do you set yourself a shopping budget, or do you purchase on an as-and-when basis?
Definitely as-and-when although my spending has taken a massive downturn off the back of our recent move. Now all my money is spent on rent and utility bills, sigh!
What is your favourite make-up brand, and why?
Illamasqua. For many reasons their stunning campaign visuals, the never-fail products, the friendly and helpful team, and most of all the brand ethos, values and ideals. I just love them!
Do you ever leave the house without wearing make-up?
Oh yeah, frequently. If I need to run up the road to get some milk I’m not going to bother. I actually went out for dinner (only Nando’s!) without make-up on the other week. Shocker! I never leave the house without nail polish on though.
What is your favourite beauty product and why?
Are you serious? I have no idea… probably Illamasqua’s powder blush in the shade Rumour as it’s the *perfect* contour colour for my skintone and helps create the illusion that I actually have a face shape rather than just an amorphous lump of flesh on my skull! It is sadly discontinued so I have to be pretty sparing with it these days.
What is your favourite nail varnish of all time? (yep, only one!)
You are EVIL. But probably China Glaze LOL from the OMG collection.
Tell us about the best holiday you’ve ever been on.
I’ve really not been on many (I didn’t even get a passport until 2011). That was the year I went to Florida with my family and that was definitely the best one, although there’s not much competition! And no, I didn’t go to Disney World. I did train dolphins at Sea World though!
What would be your ideal day off?
If I can be unrealistic about it, then it would go something like this: the day would be twice as long so I could get more done but still have a good lie-in (11am would be the magic hour for getting up). I’d have a gargantuan plate of pancakes with chocolate Philadelphia and strawberries, then I’d go shopping with an infinite amount of money. I’d come home to a delicious steak dinner (Danish sirloin steak done blue, please), then spend the evening in front of the telly writing blog posts. Perfect!
What is your favourite TV show?
Of all time? Red Dwarf for sure, but I’m also a big fan of Black Adder and Fawlty Towers. And Doctor Who! As for current things, I’m loving Derek and the new series of Black Mirror on Channel 4, and the penguin documentary series narrated by David Tennant on BBC1. I’m also massively into a US show called Face Off, a reality show where SFX artists compete against one another for a cash prize and various make-up artistry related accolades! Oh, and I’m still a fan of Glee even though it’s got a bit crappy. Shhh.
What music do you enjoy listening to?
Anything and everything – really not fussy. Actually, having said that, you can sod off with dubstep and screamo. Other than that, play me anything and I’ll probably enjoy it. At the moment, I can’t stop listening to Jamie Cullum or the soundtrack to one of my favourite films, Hedwig and the Angry Inch.
What is your favourite food?
STEAK. All the steak. But it has to be cooked blue. Mmmmm.
Where would you most like to visit in the world? (money no object)
Money no object – good Lord. There’s a lot of America I’d like to see, especially New York (cliche much – what can I say, I’m a city girl and wanna see THAT one!).
Tell us a secret…
I once thought I was going to be expelled from college for smoking green (don’t worry, I haven’t touched it in years) but it turns out I was just in trouble for truanting and they had no idea I was high as a kite. Phew!
Whoops! Quite the cheeky madam is our Leanne. Thank you for telling us about yourself and keep up with fab work with Do Not Refreeze.
