It suddenly occured to me over Christmas when reading a tweet asking about the difference between these colours that I had yet to do a comparison of them. So here you go.

Middle and little finger is You Don’t Know Jacques. Forefinger and ring finger is Over The Taupe.
As you know, You Don’t Know Jacques is one of my favourite nail varnish shades of all time. I love the fact that it is so far apart from the traditional reds and pinks. You can read my full review of it here.
Over The Taupe was released last summer as part opf a Birghts collection that was a collaboration between OPI and Paige Denim (must be American as I’ve never heard of them). Anyway, there was a lot of fiss when this collection was released that Over
the Taupe simply didn’t belong in a collection of bright blues, pinks, orange and purples. It does seem odd that a mushroom taupe was added in to a brights collection and all I can think is that YDKJ proved so successful that OPI wanted to emulate this with a similar shade.
So. As you can see, YDKJ is darker, murkier and browner, whereas OTT is more greyed out and kind of mistier.
I went out shopping with these polishes skittled onto my nails and barely noticed, so that just goes to show that they are relatively similar.
I would say that only a true polish addict would need both of these.

In terms of application, they are both more sheer than you’d expect. Both were a good 3-4 coats but once on, they dry to an amazingly glossy finish where topcoat is only necessary to dry it faster, or prolong the wear.
If you don’t quite want the darker drama of YDKJ then OTT is a

lovely choice. To be honest I love them both but I think it is because they are so similar – if that makes any sense at all?!
I would like to thank Radiant Babe for sending me my bottle of Over The Taupe. You can purchase OPI nail varnishes from her site, at around £6.45 per bottle plus P&P.
After seeing YDKJ such a lot I have grown to like it and am looking for a cheaper dupe. BUT actually I prefer OTT because it’s more chocolate. Mind you, IRL it’s no wonder people don’t notice the difference.
I’m worried that I am starting to like more conservative shades…
They do look so similar. Still they’re both different shades. Yes, only we would want them both and see how different they are! They look lovely on you so know wonder it’s one of your favorite polishes. Thanks for the comparison. I don’t have either polish. I have to get YDKJ.
It’s funny because I would never think of these 2 being that alike, just shows what a polish addict I am! YDKJ is one of my favourites too. I thought it wa strange having a taupe in the brights, I think maybe thay alrerady had the jeans colours in mind and had to do the matching polishes? Otherwise OPI would have waited and brought out OTT in a “fall” (I hate not saying Autumn!) collection.
They are really pretty. Although they are similar I have so many lipsticks, eyeshadows etc that are so close in colour its hard to tell the difference. They look a bit similar to the one with the Chanel spring collection.
I can’t decide!!! I don’t know which one I want now. I think it’s OTT for me. Blooming good price for OPI on that website, Selfridges are charging a packet for it now.
They are both very nice! I was just wondering if you knew whether either of these are similar to Barry M Chocolate Brown?
I think OTT is more dupe-able than YDKJ but I’ll get my thinking hat on for you as to whether there are dupes for either. Nothing springs immediately to mind.
Lucy, as an utter polishaholic I cannot believe you don’t have YDKJ! Thankyou as ever for your nice words 🙂
I think you’re right about the jeans thing… and the recessionista in me is the one saying they’re similar but obviously not identical!I’m glad I have both, and was surprised by how much I liked OTT.
I have that on the way so will do a comparison when it arrives – can’t wait to see it!
I know – I wouldn’t ever buy anywhere other than on the internet these days. As for which one, I really can’t help you there – I love them both!
Hi Kelly. I have Barry M’s Chocolate Brown in my untried but from memory I think that’s a straightforward brown whereas these are greyer/greener. I’ll try the Barry M properly soon and let you know.
Wow, they really are very similar. You can tell OTT is slightly “rosey” but both colors are gorgeous. I think YDKJ fairs better with my skintone.
Ooh, I love YDKJ! I bought it in an order with Orly Country Club Khaki and when they arrived and I put them next to each other I immediately thought, ‘Half moon mani!’ I got a lot of compliments on it, including one from my hairdresser who was wearing a bright red Essie at the time – quite shocking (and gratifying!) for a doubly brown mani!
I’m also wondering how interesting an ombre mani with YDKJ would be, and if you’d reach an OTT shade at some point…
Thank you for the comparison 🙂
Yes, OTT is warmer toned and I like that better but each one is nice in its own way. I think each one would look best on different skin tones as OTT has warm tones in it and YDKJ is cool.
Over The Taupe is one of my all time favourite nail colours…I come back to it time and time again…but now I’m looking at You Don’t Know Jaques and thinking I NEED to try that one too!
[…] would appear that Jade has jumped on the You Dont Know Jacques / Over The Taupe bandwagon a couple of years later than OPI. At first, from the sneaky photos I’d seen, I […]
This was so helpful and I’m glad I goggled it. I was off to the mall for OTT and know I’m going to get both… 🙂

[…] Beanie is neither new nor original. I was thinking that I was not entirely sure why everyone got so excited about it but then I had a reality check whereby it dawned on me that not everyone owns or is aware of the veritable merits of OPI’s Over The Taupe, or You Don’t Know Jacques (seen here).
