Would somebody please wheel out the violins? My first bottle of Liquid Gold* has completely run out. It’s not often I get to finish a product but I have well and truly used up the last drop of this long-standing cult beauty gem.

This year marks the 15th year anniversary of Alpha-H’s Liquid Gold. It’s described as a ‘sleep in’ liquid peel (hold up – don’t be scared!), which kick-starts the skin’s metabolism by brightening dull-looking and lack-lustre skin in one simple swoop of a soaked cotton pad.

The key ingredient is a healthy dose of glycolic acid (derived from sugar cane) but it’s also enriched with silk proteins and liquorice extract which collectively work together to stimulate and exfoliate skin cells and eradicate spot-causing bacteria so complexion looks evenly toned and luminous.

Liquid Gold looks and feels like a toner, so it is a little hard to believe something so unassuming is so effective. Yes, the rumours are true – it tingles when it comes into contact with your skin but not to point that it will burn it off. If you’re talking yourself into trying it, don’t make the error of jumping in head first. This seems to be the problem I’ve noticed with complaints about Liquid Gold not working – it must be used in moderation as it’s rather potent or it will blister your skin. That said, if you have delicate and sensitive skin then perhaps it’s best to steer clear of Liquid Gold.

Alpha-H recommends applying with a dampened cotton pad to your face, neck and décolleté once a week for 2-3 weeks to get your skin used to it before building up to 3 neat applications a week (so use on alternate nights).

For a more intense treatment, use on its own, go to bed and forget about it – perfect for when you can’t be bothered to follow through with the rest of your skincare routine. The next morning you will be peering at your face and touching it in disbelief over how clear and bright it looks.

Since using Liquid Gold, my complexion is noticeably clearer, evenly toned, smoother and brighter. I’ve skipped wearing make-up on some days (yes, even to work!) and can confidently say I have the skin I wished I had when I was in my twenties. I’m so thrilled when someone compliments me on how good my skin looks. What’s more, my bottle has lasted me months (almost 6).

My trust and faith in Alpha-H has accelerated further knowing it’s a 100% home-grown brand and product from its native Australia – family owned and manufactured off the Gold Coast. Where other indie brands have been lured by the temptation of profit by compromising on quality, it’s a relief that Alpha-H does not believe in going the same way. In fact, it would be sacrilegious to even suggest it to the team.

Oh! I almost forget to mention what you are probably wondering about – the price. A 100ml bottles costs £33.50 and Alpha-H has recently introduced a 200ml super-size bottle with 25% extra at £46.95. Liquid Gold is available from Cult Beauty and QVC Beauty (currently for £39 plus £3.95 p&p).
