A perfect wash and blow-dry can do wonders – it transforms your appearance and hide the sins of not having had a hair cut in months. Like me.

Last week I was invited to award-winning hair salon Brooks and Brooks for a wash and blow-dry and I turned up with bad looking hair – always a good start. The salon is tucked away on a side street close to Holborn tube station and the surroundings makes it feel like you are walking through a boutique arcade.

Brooks and Brooks, which opened 10 years ago, has recently undergone a £120,000 make-over. There are two floors (ground and basement) with different areas all giving a comfortable, warm and relaxing, homely feel where you can have your hair cut and coloured, and also have your nails done by their resident manicurist who only uses OPI.

I do quite a poor job of blow-drying my bob so my stylist came to the rescue and gave my limp-looking locks some lift from the crown. I was also introduced to a Bumble & Bumble product for strengthening and thickening my hair, one of the brands Brooks and Brooks uses (as well as Kérastase, L’Oréal and Kevin Murphy). It’s a shame I had nowhere to go afterwards but home. Any way, here is what I left the salon with…

These pictures were taken when I got home so excuse the ruffles courtesy of London Underground’s own unique blow-drying system. Bah.

With lots of offices and businesses in the area, Brooks and Brooks are open till 9pm most days so it’s possible to fit in an appointment after work.

Brooks and Brooks is at 13-17 Sicilian Avenue, WC1A, London. To find out more, visit You can also follow the salon on Twitter at

A few weeks ago, I had the pleasure of meeting an antipodean called Kevin Murphy.  To most, the name probably doesn’t ring a bell but in the circle of haircare, he is one of Australia’s top celebrity hair stylists, having detangled the tresses of Kylie Minogue, Cate Blanchett and Beyonce Knowles/Mrs Jay-Z.

Murphy has gone onto develop a collection of shampoos and conditioners as part of his haircare range which are only available to buy in salons and selected online retailers.

His latest offering, LUXURY. WASH and RINSE duo promises to transform thick, coarse damaged hair with its key ingredients conditioning nut oils, indulgent butters and moisturising emollients.  Together these magical ingredients aim to repair colour and chemical damage, replenish elasticity and protect from the environment.  Yeah, the same old mantra other haircare products entice you with.  However, Kevin Murphy’s products are sulphate and paraben-free (Helen, does that turn you on?)  It also promises to reduce frizz and fly-away follicles, leaving hair silky-soft, shiny and manageable.

Now yours truly isn’t blessed with thick, luscious locks so when I showed my disappointment, Kevin was quick to turn my frown upside down with a milder version for fine, fragile and coloured hair, the cutely titled ANGEL.WASH and RINSE.  Also sulphate and paraben-free, the ANGEL range infuses hair with volume and moisture, whilst a blend of powerful antioxidants protects hair from colour fade.  This sounded like music to my ears!  So off I trotted home, excited to lather up my locks.

A distinctive feature of Kevin Murphy’s range is the shape of the bottles, which are like building blocks.  Also the bottle opens at the bottom.  I asked Kevin the reason behind designing them in this way.  He explained it made it much easier to stack them up in confined spaces like the shower cubicle or bathroom than the conventional cylinder shaped bottle which would also have to be propped upside down to dispense of the remaining product when it would be running out.

I also like the colour of the ANGEL bottles – a soft, baby pink which reflects its gentility and it’s pretty unique to label the shampoo as a ‘wash’ and the conditioner as a ‘rinse’.

I have been treating my hair with ANGEL.WASH and RINSE for a month now and I am not surprised by its results.  For what it preaches, I expected nothing less than for it to give memanageable, healthy looking hair.  The consistency of the product feels light and the scent is divine.  I only use a very tiny amount, which is strongly advised of the LUXURY range too.

Frustratingly I have greasy hair so  dealing with it is a nightmare with most shampoos and conditioners on the market.  I”ve had to adopt a stringent policy in buying haircare products, and sadly I can’t use anything available on supermarket shelves – they ruin my hair!  Even so-called mild baby shampoos are evil.

As a result, I’m in favour of haircare products that are free of nasties like paraben and sulphate, which I fear contribute to worsening the condition of (my) hair so kudos to Kevin for championing his products without these ingredients.  The feeling is noticeable with my hair feeling light, and there is volume in the roots. Blow-drying is easier too.  I am inclined to stock up on ANGEL if it continues to give me these results.

At present, the ANGEL range is available as a Christmas gift set, containing the shampoo and conditioner at 250ml each and a 50ml hair spray for £25.95.  The Luxury collection is available in 250 ml size bottles too, at around £15 each.
