Foundation Files (11): Too Faced – Born This Way

When Too Faced launched their Born This Way foundation (a nod at Lady Gaga, yes?), there were mixed reviews. Usually anything remotely negative puts off but something persuaded me to give it a try and so I invested in a bottle a few months ago. I’m pleased the gamble paid off because for my normal (and dehydrated) skin, this oil-free foundation works wonderfully. I went for the shade ‘Sand’ but didn’t swatch it in store, instead blindly putting my faith in friend and YouTuber Shahleena (whom I often share foundation matches with) and ordering it online, so Shahleena, if you’re reading this, thank you. ‘Sand’ is an excellent match, not too yellow, just with the right level of golden undertones to match my natural skin tone.

Born This Way is named so as it claims to give a natural radiant appearance as if you were ‘born this way’, masterfully diffusing the line between make-up and skin and covering up imperfections.
This liquid foundation is infused with coconut water to help replenish moisture levels, alpine rose to brighten the skin’s appearance and promote elasticity and hyaluronic acid for a smoother, more youthful appearance. It offers buildable coverage from medium to layering on to full, and comes with a pump.

What I like about it is it’s lightweight, comfortable and long-lasting (I usually apply it around 7:30am without the need for touch-ups). It also blends quickly and easily, something I value when I’m in a hurry to leave home for work every morning and it deals with reducing the appearance of pores. The only thing I am not fond of is the tacky looking labelling on the glass bottle – the gold type face and italics is cheap and does not reflect the price tag of almost £30.

Speaking of which, Born This Way costs £29 for 30ml – it costs less than Estee Lauder’s Double Wear but price matches its closest rival, Urban Decay’s All Nighter (also a personal favourite), however I feel Born This Way just edges ahead of All Nighter.

Born This Way is available from Debenhams and Too Faced’s flagship store in London’s Carnaby Street.
