If you are stuck for ideas for Christmas gifts, you can’t go wrong with perfume but with so many fragrances on offer, it does seem a bit daunting.  Here are a few fragrances – some new and some classics – which may inspire you…

Yellow Diamond by Versace
We all know Versace does nothing by halves.  Well feast your eyes on this bobby dazzler – the larger-than-life stopper resembles a glamorous and opulent looking door knob.

In transparent yellow (which doesn’t look very appealing), the scent is nothing like its bottle, which is loud and well, soooo Versace.

I can best describe Yellow Diamond as light and sweet which derives from notes of citron, pear sorbet, bergamot, neroli, orange blossom, freesia, mimosa, nymphea, amber, palo santo wood and musk.  I expected the fragrance to be over-empowering but it’s actually very delicate.  I’ve received countless compliments from people who’ve caught a whiff of it, which is a first as normally I vary my choice of perfumes and no one barely remarks on them (not that I expect anyone to).  I just found it interesting people noticed Yellow Diamond, so there you go, it will get you noticed (as will the bottle on your dressing table) but for the right reasons.

Available as EDT in 30ml (£31.50), 50ml (£45) and 90ml (£61)

Thierry Mugler’s Angel

Angel is the Marmite of perfumes and funnily enough, it reminds a lot of people of school/college.  Angel was my very first perfume, and I fell in love with its sweet, chocolately scent at first sniff but it clearly divides people as I discovered when my best friend confessed to feeling sick every time I wore it.  It’s got to the point where I would have to think twice about wearing it for fear of offending someone or making them wretch.

This updated version is much softer and subtle with a new bottle designed to distinguish the new from the original.  The scent is composed of soft notes of bergamot, sweet notes of red fruits and praline and a blend of patchouli, vanilla, cedar wood and white musk.  The original in its star-shaped bottle is still available if you’re a fan.

Available as EDT in 40ml (£45) and 80ml (£85)

Aura by Swarovski Eau de Parfum
Crystal brand Swarovski have debuted on the perfume market with Aura, a limited edition fragrance  that sparkles with Swarovski crystals in two shades – Indian Pink and Northern lights.  Half the beauty of a perfume is the actual bottle and Swarovski, has gone one step beyond with a design that is modern, simplistic, architectural and artistic.  Let’s face it, this one would stand out on your dressing table now, wouldn’t it?

Launched in September this year it’s a soft floral and fruity scent, perfect for daywear but also ideal if you’re not keen on something profoundly overbearing.  The notes include lychee, rose, tuberose, pink pepper, amber, benzoin and white musk, which blended together smells divine.

Swarovski has also brought out a lavish offering that will set you back £950 exclusively from Harrods.  This perfume is highly concentrated and housed in an enormous crystal shaped like a huge jewel (and it weighs a lot!)  I guess this is something for someone who has everything!

Available in 50ml for £59 and also as a refillable.

Inis Energy of the Sea
Now if you’re looking for something unique, then Inis Energy of the Sea may be the answer.  This fragrance hails from the Emerald isle (‘inis’ actually means ‘island’).  That makes sense as on a trip to Dublin this summer, I visited one of the Aran islands (Inis Oirr, I believe)…beautiful place, by the way.

Brought to you by Fragrances of Ireland, it’s a scent for both men and women, very cool, refreshing and crisp.  It may be unknown to the UK but has been outselling many major fragrances in Ireland since its inception in 1998.  It’s an ideal scent for those who feel suffocated by the overload of sweet fragrances around at the moment – a total breath of fresh air actually.

To the best of my knowledge, I don’t think this is readily available in the Uk and so if you would like to order this scent, you can get it directly from http://www.perfume.ie/.

Ghost
The original Ghost is mesmerisingly beautiful.  There are few fragrances I return to over and over again and this is one of them.  With notes of vanilla, musk, jasmine, sandalwood and rose petal, the combination is sensual and lusciously feminine without being the slightest bit sickly.

The bottle itself is simple yet elegant too and believe me when I tell you the scent lasts…and lasts all day and all night.  I think this is a love affair that will never die for me…I’ve been wearing it every day for the past week, unable to tear myself away from it.  Also worth a look from Ghost’s collection is Deep Night and Sweetheart.

Available in 30ml (£23), 50ml (£30) and 100ml EDT (£42).  Gift sets of EDT and body lotion also available from £24 to £32.50 (all prices RRP).

  1. I love Ghost – its musky – which I don’t normally like – but it is gorgeous, plus you only need a little bit so it lasts for ages . I normally like citrus perfumes, but agree this one is timeless.
