Today I had the pleasure of attending the UK press launch of OPI’s Spring/Summer 2012 collection. Forget the fact that one minute I was admiring the Christmas lights on Oxford Street and the next was plunged into the world of Spring Summer, let’s take a look at the OPI Holland Collection!
The event was held at Claridges. Never been there before but let me tell you, it is definitely the swishest place I have ever visited. I wanted to have a big old explore but the doormen positioned at 10 metre intervals soon put paid to that.
The theme of the collection is Holland. The names are as cheesy as Edam, and I am really impressed. I was expecting pastels or neons, or (god forbid) more sorbets. I can safely say that this collection contains none of those things. I think it has borrowed heavily from both Zoya’s Smoke & Mirrors A/W collection and also added in some left-over Pirates of the Caribbean pigments. Let’s take a look at the individual shades, shall we?
Gouda Gouda Two Shoes – take a walk on the wild side with this robust rose. At first I wasn’t sure about this – it reminded me of that salmony shade from the France collection (the name of which escapes me, it’s been a long day). I don’t really know if it is rose toned either as it looked browner to me. Gouda Gouda Two Shoes is a creme with subtle gold microshimmer which makes it more interesting.
Pedal Faster Suzi – this pink lavender shimmer will have you “wheeling”. This doesn’t look like it really belongs in this collection as it is the only random glittery shade. This will be hugely popular for Spring though – very delicate and like an Easter egg. Lovers of girly pink shades will be in heaven here.
A Roll In The Hague – take advantage of this frisky little orange. Well, it wouldn’t be a Holland themed collection without an orange shade, would it? Love the name of this. Standard orange creme, very pigmented.
Red Lights Ahead…Where? – this coral-packed red is the hottest in the district. Look! They put it in a window, just like the famous ladies of the Amsterdam red light district. Haha. This is a nice shade and proved to be the most popular request among those who had manicures at the event. Pigmented and glossy, similar to Red My Fortune Cookie from the Hong Kong collection of 2009. Only nicer.
Kiss Me On My Tulips – a smooch-worthy shade of hot pink. Nice but boring. Pretty similar to I’m India Mood For Love or other vibrant pink cremes of this ilk.
Vampsterdam – a deep purple for a divine diva. Another fantastic name. This is a very deep shimmery plum shade along the lines of Lincoln Park At Midnight. Not original but very beautiful. Interesting for Spring though, such a dark shade.
Wooden Shoe Like To Know? it’s no secret, everybody loves this shimmery chocolate brown. This was love at first sight for me. A mid yellow-toned brown that is packed with golden shimmer. I couldn’t stop picking the bottle up and rolling it round in my hand – this is top of my list. Daft name though.
Did You ‘ear About Van Gogh? Rumour has it this sandy bisque is a work of art. This is one of those shades that are going to look dreadful on some people and fantastic on others. Murky beige creme. Reminds me of Skull & Glossbones from the Pirates collection mixed with Titan Your Toga (which collection?). Interesting, but not for everyone.
I Don’t Give A Rotterdam – this sassy steel-blue shimmer means business. Oh yes it does. Beautiful. A cool mid-blue that is jam packed with really visible silver shimmer. Like fish-scales. This is really special – silver but also a little bit of turquoise and black too.
Thanks a Windmillion – you totally deserve this breezy sea green. This is kind of “meh” to me. Like Stranger Tides met Mermaid’s Tears. It’s a nice shade but kind of feels out of place in this collection. I know green fans will eat this up, but it’s not calling to me.
Dutch ‘Ya Just Love OPI? All of Holland hollers for this crowd-pleasing plum. Yippee! OPI hasn’t done a mauve shade for ages, and finally, here it is. This is my New Favourite Thing. Mid-toned mauve creme packed with golden microshimmer. This is backupworthy.
I Have A Herring Problem – what’s that you say? I need to “sea” this shimmery green-blue? Yes, yes you do. This is another total beauty. Teal toned blue with golden shimmer. This is based on the same premise as I Don’t Give A Rotterdam but is warmer and darker. Out of the two I prefer this but only just – it’s a tough call to make, so I shall be getting them both!
Also at the event were QVC <a UK home shopping channel> who were interviewing bloggers about their llove of OPI and their reaction to the launch and the new shades. I was way too much of a wuss to go on screen (I’m still suffering with post-Portugal-hen-party fatigue) but my friends Gemma from London Beauty Review and Sara from Daily Polish were brave. OK, so I volunteered them, but they took it in good humour. Sorry, Mum, I know you’d have wanted me to do it. Watch out for Gemma & Sara on QVC early next year when the collection goes on sale!
Let’s take a look at two of these new polishes in more detail, shall we?
I Don’t Give A Rotterdam. Like I said, gorgeous. Chilly but without being frosty. Look at the shimmer and shine!
Dutch ‘Ya Just Love OPI? I told you this was ace. Tell me you don’t like this, and I’ll call you a fibber!
I also have Red Lights Ahead…Where? but it was so dark by the time I got home tonight that I couldn’t get a decent swatch so I am saving that for another day. In the meantime, here’s the swatch card.
Phew. So, what do you think? I’m dying to hear your thoughts!
