Would you trust a flannel to remove your make-up? What if it was a magical flannel? Well the Makeup Eraser*, which removes all traces of makeup, has been a huge hit in the States and is now available in the UK.

Launched two years ago, the Makeup Eraser is a soft flannel that only uses water to help remove the toughest makeup including waterproof mascara, eyeliner and lipstick. I was sceptical about this and for a while, could not get my head round it.

To start with, it has to be put in the washing machine. Then you simply wet a portion with warm water, and using the short nap side, gently rub on your skin in a circular motion. The soft micro-fibre material will dislodge and remove make-up without the need of a cleanser. To exfoliate, flip over and repeat the process, letting the long nap side deep cleanse (although I did not notice a difference between the two sides in texture – they both felt the same.) The Original Makeup Eraser is roughly the length of a face towel but narrower in width.

The cloth is machine washable and apparently lasts more than a thousand washes, thus saving you a lot of money in cleansing products.

As I said, I was sceptical but I followed the instructions and used it to remove a full face of make-up. Usually I will use some micellar water and cotton pads to initially take off the bulk of slap. To see if it had truly worked, I went straight onto the toner and lo and behold, the cotton pads did not have a trace of make-up on them.

I do wish I had this on my trip to the States back in April as it would have cut out the need to take cleansing products in my limited luggage allowance. The Original Makeup Eraser is perfect for travel, festivals, weekends away, etc.

The material is very soft even after washing unlike a face towel’s fibres that harden. It’s also ideal for those with very sensitive skin or for anyone who isn’t keen on using cleansing products (be it because of what they’re made of or the costs). That said, I wouldn’t use this every day as with frequent use, I did get a few tiny spots and whiteheads.

As someone who wears make-up several times a week, I still think extra help from a cleanser is needed to get deep into the pores. Besides I find it relaxing and therapeutic to massage a cleansing product into my skin. However on a no make-up day, reaching for this magical flannel would do no harm and like I said, it’s a good travel buddy.

The Original Makeup Eraser is available from Boots at £16.50, Selfridges and Beauty Bay to name but a few and in a choice of three colours – bright pink, pastel blue and black.
