Pimps & Pinups

pimps-and-pinups-shoreditch-5I have a sad story to tell. My hairdresser has uprooted from London and moved up north. It’s as if someone’s cut off my electricity, water and broadband in one go. OK, that’s being melodramatic but you know how attached I was to my stylist (and colourist who has also gone with her). Five glorious years… I mean, it’s not over but it’s not going to be easy to visit them as often as I did when they were in London. This means I on the hunt for somewhere closer to home for the in-between, oh-God-it’s-an-emergency-and-I-need-someone-to-fix-my-hair and I reckon I have found just the place – Pimps & Pinups in Shoreditch.

pimps-and-pinups-shoreditch-1This retro salon, nestled on the border of Spitalfields market, is inside a Victorian grade II listed building. Step over the threshold and you are greeted with Hollywood bulb-lit mirrors, black walls and a huge neon green sign beaming at you.

Pimps & Pinups has been going for over 10 years and even has a branch in New York. It also recently struck up a new friendship with ASOS to sell its haircare range online, including their Rose Oil shampoo and conditioner that I reviewed a few months ago.

I turned up for a cut and blow-dry/style to see a couple of mature ladies already seated in the waiting area. Amazing! Pimps and Pinups makes everyone feel welcome. The music is loud, the chairs are all taken and the atmosphere is buzzing. I had the lovely Lorenzo take care of me and we ended up chatting about where is best to go for a spa treatment in London and our holidays.

Lorenzo didn’t chop off too much as I am keen to keep growing my hair but the tidy up was much needed. He also introduced me to Pimps & Pinups’ Blow Tone, a blow-dry spray with a hint of colour to keep my highlights looking fresh and vibrant. Then I let him style my hair in the best way he deemed best and he gave me 70s style waves and curls with the roots gently backcombed to give me some much needed volume. It had never occurred to me to do that so I learned something new that I can easily do myself.

pimps-and-pinups-shoreditch-6There is a full price list on their website and in the salon window but just to give you an idea, ladies cut costs £45 and blow-dries are from £30, which is very reasonable.

There is a lot of life and soul (but no pretentiousness) at Pimps & Pinups and Shoreditch is lucky to have it. I will definitely be coming back to have my tresses teased.

Pimps & Pinups is at 14 Lamb Street, Spitafields, London, E1 6EA and is open 7 days a week.  To find out more or to book an appointment, visit pimpsandpinups.com. Their haircare range is available at www.asos.com with prices ranging from £7.99 to £11.99.
