Read Time:3 Minute, 31 Second

Three words (of gratitude) come to mind when I think of Caroline Hirons: flannels and Glow Tonic. Actually, make that five with Duran Duran. Both the humble flannel and Pixi’s Glow Tonic have changed the way my skin looks and feels. Now two more are set to join the fold – Double Cleanse.

It just had to happen, didn’t it? No one else has drilled it into my conscience to double cleanse more than Lady Hirons and since she casually dropped the imminent launch of her first and long awaiting product at the end of last year, the anticipation has been nothing short of off the scale quite frankly.

I’m glad Caroline has purposely taken her time with a product that represents everything she stands for rather than throw something out there for the sake of it. I’ve no doubt she’s had countless offers but she chose to stick to something close to her heart and collaborate with Pixi Beauty, who in turn let Caroline pick exactly what went into the formula and this is paramount. This is why Double Cleanse is not perfumed, contains no parabens nor does it have any essential and mineral oils so it will suit most skin types. Impregnating a skincare product with all these irritants (to want a better word) just defeats the purpose.

Any way! I got my paws on a pot a day after it launched (and sold out in Pixi’s flagship store off Carnaby Street). Cue many of you posting messages and questions on my Instagram and so I’m going to get straight into it.

Double Cleanse comes in a simple, fuss-free 100ml jar and is split 50-50 into a solid cleansing oil and cream. A solid plastic insert goes over the top neatly to keep the two products from mixing.

In case it had passed you by, double cleansing is exactly what it says it is – remove the first round of gunk ideally with a balm, wipe off with a warm flannel and follow-up with a second round with a different cleanser to wipe off anything left behind. Putting the concept into one convenient pot is genius. Often the simplest ideas are the best.

Cleanse 1 is the solid, colourless balm which melts into an oil and breaks down the make-up (and SPF!). Like seriously everything – nothing stands in its way. It contains Camellia Oil, Vitamin E, Evening Primrose Oil and Avocado Oil to protect, condition, nourish and moisturise.

Here’s a swatch of Jeffree Star’s (*cough* Sorry, Caroline!) Unicorn Blood Velour Liquid Lipstick, which doesn’t shift after application:

As I gently rubbed the balm onto the swatch, it turned into an oil and quickly liquidified the lipstick. Hnnghhhh! One swipe with a damp cotton pad and…it came off.

Cleanse 2 is a cream to mop up any remnants not picked up the first time, which will be very little given how thorough the balm is. It contains Vitamin C, Peptide Complex and Arginine to protect, plump, improve cell renewal and elasticity. It’s also moisturising. Following Cleanse 1, there was a slight tinge of red left but the cream removed it.

I’ve used Double Cleanse to take off Estee Lauder’s Double Wear foundation, which, as many of you will testify, doesn’t budge once set. Did it work? Yes, Caroline, it bloody worked! Normally I take my make-up off with something like Bioderma before cleansing but I was curious to put this to an extreme test so I skipped that step…and Double Cleanse smashed it.

The lady herself has confirmed there will be a travel size available in the near future but even then, this full size has made its way into my suitcase. My only suggestion would be to have a spatula but it’s just me being anal.

I know this sold out as soon as it was released but Pixi is restocking regularly so check online, call their boutique…just do what you need to and get your hands on it – obviously don’t nick it.

Double Cleanse costs £24 and is available from Pixi Beauty online and in-store as well as Marks & Spencer. The signed box is priceless. Thanks, Caroline.
