Sainsbury’s vs Herbal Essences
2012

A little while ago I was at a press day for Sainsbury’s beauty range. It was a really interesting event, promoting the fact that Sainsbury’s have really listened to their shoppers and produced a more simple, cruelty-free range of products that are branded in a straightforward way.
I was intrigued to see the Sainsbury’s “Herbal” range of shampoos and conditioners. Whilst Sainsbury’s might be promoting a back to basics approach, doesn’t this look familiar? Hmmm.
In comparison, the Sainsbury’s shampoo actually doesn’t pack as much of a punch scent-wise as the Herbal Essences. It has a clean and fresh scent, but is no way as obtrusive as Herbal Essences can be. For some, this might be a good thing, but I know that some people do like the exotic fragrances.
In terms of how this performed, it was just fine. Both my husband and I have experienced itchy scalps from using Herbal Essences, but I’m pleased to say that we didn’t have any problems with the Sainsbury’s one. Did my hair look super shiny? In all honesty, no. But it looked and felt clean, and that’s what you really want from a shampoo, right?
Herbal Essences shampoos cost around £3.00 for 400ml, and the Sainsbury’s Herbal is £1.36. Bargain!

Wow it always surprises me when big supermarkets get away with “copy branding” How easy would it be for the Herbal Essences customers to pick this up by accident – I think you can almost guarantee that Sainsburys place it on the shelf where Herbal Essences was and move Herbal essences down a bit
