The trouble with Barry M nail varnishes is that you never know what you’re going to get. Some of their nail polishes, mainly the ones that are still
languishing in my untrieds, are so horribly sheer that I can’t really see the point of them. And some are gloriously opaque and worthy of the hype.
The imaginatively named “Black” thankfully falls into the latter camp. Although not thick enough to Konad with (believe me, I’ve tried), this is a fantastically pigmented black that gave me very few issues like bald spots or dragging.
My only criticism is that this is a slightly brown toned black. I’ve heard others mention that their versions of this lean towards the navy blue side. This doesn’t, but I have
to say that it does lack the pure jet black quality and impact of Illamasqua Boosh.
So, we have both scales. High end, and high street. Actually, my photos of the Barry M look better than the Illamasqua ones but I put that down to the level of sunshine that was about on the day.
I have to say that I know the majority of you wouldn’t even think about dropping £13 on a black nail varnish when you can get such a close imitation for ten quid less. Obviously, I have both, so I’m the real fool here but I know they are going to get used, either on their own, or as a
base for other colours.
So, where do you stand on the budget vs luxury debate? And do you mind me showing you black nails in July?
Helen
There is a tempatation to buy boosh just for the name, but I’d probably get the barry m one if I was in the market for a new black polish…cheapskate me.
I think I’m going to buy Boosh as I still need the perfect black. And I like that you’re showing black nails in July!
Strangely, I find this to be one of the more thin and watery Barry Ms! Maybe I just got a bad bottle…

I used to wear a Barry M black many many years ago in my rock clubbing days.
wow…i remember Barry M being my first black nail varnish back in the day when they were the only ones doing a black! back then the varnish wasnt that great but it had a closed market!
I use now Models Own black, its slightly matt, so i have the option of leaving it like that or adding a glossy top coat and having it nice and shiny. Its also from what i can see a pure black.
I don’t mind black nails during the summer. I’ve been wearing dark shades. I just wear what I like whatever the season. I love your nails in black, they look amazing. I think I just buy what I like. I don’t delibertly look for either end of the price range. I just bought my first Chanel polish. Also the Deborah Lippmann trio of polishes from Nordstroms. They weren’t cheap but the shades are worth it.
